As the saying goes, “Let’s Start at the Very Beginning”– Bella Vista

Food, food, wonderful food – whether you like quick eats or fine dining, you’ll find it in the Bella Vista section.  The word “Bella” means beautiful and “Vista” means sight, and boy will you see a beautiful sight when you visit the amazing Ninth Street Italian Market!  Filled with the charm of one of the Philadelphia neighborhoods that attracts families and crowds of tourists each year, this residential area has a wealth of foods in this, the oldest open-air Market for ethnic foods of all kinds.

Bella Vista was originally the South Philadelphia neighborhood where Italia immigrants who came by boat, first made their home.  But as with the melting pot of New York, Philadelphia has been graced with the addition of many immigrant cultures and their delicious foods!

The Ninth Street Italian Market boasts Vietnamese and Mexican foods as well, and this rich mixture of cultures has created a welcome boost of growth and variety.  Visitors who love to eat hearty (and who doesn’t) can enjoy a fabulous range of some of the Philadelphia’s most cherished late-night and brunch restaurants.  Truly Bella Vista is like the smorgasboard of Philadelphia neighborhoods!

Ninth Street stretches north to south – from Fitzwater Street down to Wharton – but you can begin anywhere along the delicious strip and find just about anything your taste buds long for.  There is a rich array of cheeses, pasta places, sandwiches, great coffee bistros and fresh produce stores and more.

Now when you have perused Ninth Street and grazed in some of the less formal eateries and markets, this Philadelphia neighborhood has more to offer.  Between Sixth and Eleventh streets you’ll find Washington Avenue boasts some sit-down, higher-end restaurants, but you can also find Southeast Asian flair soup and sandwich stops, as well as local taquerias, sports bars and other varieties of casual dining as well.

Don’t miss Wing Phat Plaza on the Western Edge where you’ll find a large area of shopping and restaurants filled with the best Vietnamese faire.

To sum it up, you’ll have to forget about counting calories when you visit Bella Vista.  This Philadelphia neighborhood alone deserves to be the place you return to frequently throughout your stay.

Until next week, as we bring you more great tips on more exciting Philadelphia neighborhoods, happy eats!

My company had an international artist picked up at JFK and dropped off in Philadelphia, and the artist had the best time. The driver kept in touch with me throughout the day, so we could plan for arrival, and our artist had the most wonderful experience with the driver. That’s really astounding considering our artist had just gotten off a red-eye from across the world. Thank you so very much!
