How To Balance The Price vs. Reliability Decision Making Process.

As consumers, or decision-makers in organization or business, we always seem to come to a decision making challenge and having to compare cost versus reliability or quality. We have all had experiences where we can argue the lower the cost, the lower the quality or the higher the cost, the higher the quality. In many instances this is a real equation. But, depending on the product or service, these waters can often get very cloudy.

When making a decision on a more expensive paper clip versus the possible loss in quality, a paper clip “decision”, is a clear and relatively easy consideration with possibly, in equally clear decision process. However, as the price of any product or service increases this equation becomes more difficult and certainly more important. When we consider the paper clip example, the time and consideration to come to a conclusion is often short and quick.

Our common sense may tell us that we should expect higher quality in a service or product, if we spend more. We have all heard stories of someone securing a product or service at a truly discounted price, but after time, due to product or service failure, significantly increased effort or many other components at equal product or service satisfaction, we end up paying more and can see clearly that if we had chosen a higher quality product and service from the start, it would have been a better decision. Sometimes, we are simply “forced” into a position to secure a lower price. After all, a budget is a budget.

We see advertisements and promotions they use words like “affordable”, “cheap”, “quality” and many other adjectives that describe this type of service. As business owners, we always have to take these words in relationship to our vehicles and service and discuss the best way to construct the image we feel will present us in accurate manner. And, for the record, we understand that words are words and ultimately performance his performance and at the end of the day you will be evaluated or judged on consistent performance much more than you will be evaluated on price. On the other hand, this is the nature business we are in. If we simply replace executive car or luxury limousine with the term taxicab, this distinction takes on a new meaning.

We believe that the limousine or executive sedan service will ultimately be measured on performance much more than it will be on price. Consider hiring any type of private car service, or any vehicle for that matter for price a discounted price, then receiving a less than satisfactory service experience. If the driver is late, the limo holds a foul odor, the driver contains a foul odor, it’s an older and less safe vehicle, not the vehicle you were expecting or any other service defficiencies that may significantly affect the 1st leg of travel when your families once a year vacation. We would then be inclined to 1st rethink our decision and quickly start to understand that $25 more would have been a reasonable and perhaps much better decision.

The primary, and maybe most obvious reason is that this is a decision or decision process is something we all share at one point or another. This specific challenge can be applied to almost any product or service we consider purchasing as a consumer or as part of an organization. The other reason we have taken this time and effort to share is to possibly shed some additional light on how this decision process affects our service directly. Although, as we have stated above, it may all come out in the wash eventually, it would be better that our research and ultimately our decision if this takes place in a faster and less painless manner.
