Through June 12, 2016, area visitors and travelers alike are converging on Franklin Square in the evening hours to experience the glow of night coming to life with brilliant and magical illuminations on display at the Chinese Lantern Festival.

 

This grand event is held in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Philadelphia’s revamped landmark park. Here’s what you can expect if you attend this uniquely enthralling affair…

 

PHILADELPHIA’S CHINESE LANTERN FESTIVAL

There will be plenty of food and activities at the event, but let’s start with the main attraction: the vast array of spectacular illuminations, handcrafted by lantern artisans from China, including:

  • Centerpiece 200-foot-long Chinese dragon
  • Chinese traditional palace
  • 3-story pagoda
  • Glowing tunnel of light
  • Sea of flowers, pandas and other assorted lanterns

In addition to these magnificent original creations, visitors can also enjoy Franklin Square‘s permanent favorites such as the classic carousel and 18-hole mini-golf course!

ACTIVITIES

The view alone is glorious, but there are also plenty of engaging activities for attendees of all ages:

  • Face-Changing – Marvel at this 300-year tradition of the Sichuan opera.
  • Plate Spinning – witness the 2,000-year-old art of spinning plates and awe-inspiring acrobatics.
  • Juggling – Be thoroughly entertained by talented performers juggling and clowning around.
  • Kung Fu Tea – Don’t miss this unique performance in a routine called “Kung Fu Tea”.
  • Hula Hoops – Watch gymnasts twirl an amazing number of hoops in moves dating back to ancient Egypt.
  • Balance and Contortionism – Be amazed by this impressive performance of strength and stability.
  • Traditional Chinese Dance – Delight in the art of Tibetan dance and the dance of the Dai Minority.

FOOD & DRINK

Don’t forget to stop by the Dragon Beer Garden to enjoy culturally-inspired beer, wine, cocktails or non-alcoholic libations and delectable snacks in view of the 200-foot illuminated dragon centerpiece. Here’s a sneak-peek at some of the samplings that will be available:

EVENT/TICKET INFORMATION

Festival hours:

  • Sunday through Thursday from 6:00pm to 10:00pm
    Friday and Saturday from 6:00pm to 11:00pm

Ticket pricing:

  • Children ages 2 and under: Free
    Youth (17 and under): $12.00 
    Adults: $17.00
    Seniors (65 and over) and Military: $15.00

Special group pricing is available for groups of 20 or more, and reservations must be made at least one week in advance. Group rates are as follows:

  • Adults (age 18 and over): $15/person
    Youth (age 17 and under): $11/person

You can even host a special event at the festival pavilion for friends, family or colleagues! Rental packages start at $620.00 and include 3 hours of event time in the indoor Pavilion, entrance to the festival, carousel rides and more.
