The Moshulu restaurant is an interesting part of Philadelphia history. What is the Moshulu? Well yes it’s a restaurant as mentioned in the title of this blog post but it is a restaurant in the form of a square rigged sailing ship. As a matter of fact, it is the largest square rigged sailing vessel that is still floating. Imagine that, dining or a structure like this. It is an awesome experience and thats why it is one of Philadelphia’s attractions that is a must see.
A little bit of history about the Moshulu: This vessel was built in 1904 in Glasgow Scotland. At this period of time, the Moshulu was like the Titanic in terms of cutting edge ship building. The pinnacle of man’s achievement in the art of “package cargo sailing ships”. Can you imagine a sailing ship at that time that had 34 sails covering 45,000 square feet of space? I guess I have to image it too because I also was not in Hamburg Germany in the year 1904. In 1917, while in an American port, the U.S. Navy confiscated the Moshulu, renamed it Dreadnaught and kept her in commission. The Dreadnaught was re-named The Moshulu by Mrs. Woodrow Wilson which translates to “One Who Fears Nothing”. Her last commercial voyage was in 1939 from Buenos Aires to Norway. As awesome of a spectacle as this beautiful ship is now, it is hard to believe what she may have looked like in the 1940s when she was sunk in a storm near Narvik in 1947. Thankfully the Finnish government refloated her just for the purpose of storage in 1961. Finally, by way of the South Seaport in New York, the Moshulu finally claimed it’s part of Philadelphia history by being moved to Penn’s Landing in 1974.
In 1975, the Moshulu open up as a restaurant at Philadelphia’s Penn’s Landing only to find itself in a four alarm fire and closed down to the public in 1989. Thankfully to all of us un Philadelphia, the Mosholo was then purchased by HMS Ventures in 1994 and remarkably restored by Dodo Hamilton who was a member of the famous Cambell’s Soup family. It was then opened back up for business in 1996 on the Delaware River. The final chapter (so far) was in 2002 where the Moshulu was moved from Pier 34 to it’s current location and reopened in May of 2003.
Okay, now that we have educated you on some of the Moshulu’s history, we can move onto information that can be more useful to you today. As we have told you throughout this blog post, the Moshulu is now an award winning, AAA 4 Diamond rated Philadelphia bar and restaurant. You can experience this piece of Philadelphia history for lunch or dinner and one of the more attractive elements of the Moshulo is the Bongo Bar & Deck.
