SOME HISTORY OF THE PHILADELPHIA ZOO
Like many other Philadelphia landmarks and institutions, the Philadelphia Zoo is an American first. The charter establishing the Zoological Society of Philadelphia was approved and signed on March 21, 1859. Due to the Civil War, however, it was another 15 years before America’s first zoo was ready to open.
The Zoo opened its gates on July 1, 1874. The Frank Furness Victorian gates and gatehouses, and the Zoo’s location, are the same today as they were on the day it opened. One of its assets, then and now, is John Penn’s home, The Solitude, which sat on the land chosen for the Zoo. John Penn was the grandson of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. The Solitude is considered to be Philadelphia’s most precise and elegant expression of neoclassical style.
Since the early 1700’s, the idea of an American zoo was inspired by English settlers with a keen interest in wildlife and by sailors and hunters who returned from faraway lands with exotic animals they’d never seen before. People would gather and pay shillings to see animals such as lions and elephants displayed at places like general stores and museums. As a hub of scientific inquiry and discovery over many years, Philadelphia’s well-known leaders of the time began to formulate the idea of a zoo. In the mid-1850’s, a prominent Philadelphia physician, Dr. William Camac-the Zoo’s founding father-became involved and led the way to making America’s first zoo a reality.
Zoo360 currently consists of three trails: Treetop Trail, Great Ape Trail and soon, Big Cat Crossing (with more on the way!). The trails link existing animal habitats, so animals with similar habitat requirements can use one another’s spaces in a time-sharing system and take advantage of more room to roam. New destination exhibits will be coming in future years as well, designed to accommodate all of the species that would use each trail type
Opening May 10!
Big Cat Crossing—an extension of Zoo360, Philadelphia Zoo’s revolutionary, first-in-the-world animal travel and exploration system—promises the most majestic of creatures more room to roam.
Big Cat Crossing is a 330-foot mesh-engineered overhead passageway that extends from First Niagara Big Cat Falls and the Zoo’s main visitor path. The trail encourages our large felines— lions, tigers, pumas, jaguars and more— to stretch their legs and explore. The expanded footprint will fuel the curiosity of the Zoo’s big cats, as well as that of each of our guests.
Treetop Trail is an elevated trail for monkeys and lemurs to travel from their habitats in the Rare Animal Conservation Center outside through the trees around Impala Plaza. Animal fans of the system include the red-capped mangabey, black-and white colobus monkeys, white-faced sakis, blue-eyed lemurs and mongoose lemurs who love to travel and explore among the treetops providing visitors and animals with interesting new encounters!
Philadelphia Zoo is continuing its transformation! Come and see the monkeys and lemurs from both Rare Animal Conservation Center and PECO Primate Reserve as they travel far beyond their usual homes. A new 925-foot trail starting from the existing Treetop Trail around Impala Plaza winds through the trees down the Zoo’s main path, into KidZooU and ultimately connecting with PECO Primate Reserve. Trails and climbing aren’t just for monkeys though– as part of KidZooU, another 400-foot trail connects areas for goats and sheep to travel right over the KidZooU entrance! This trail also connects to a supersized tower for goats, which love to climb. The Zoo’s new trail system has begun to transform the Zoo experience for animals and guests alike.
Come and check out another pioneering pathway, but for much bigger primates, at PECO Primate Reserve! The Great Ape trail is connected to the orangutans’ outdoor yard, and enables them to travel and explore outside of their usual home, crossing high over the visitor path! The Great Ape Trail is an innovative rectangular network of flexible stainless steel mesh, 16 feet off the ground and approximately 200 feet in length.
Looking forward to a stress-free day at the zoo? See you there!

Check out what our clients have to say about their experience with us.
Our driver arrived a few minutes early, was professional, courteous and got us to the airport for our early morning flight without any problem! The car was immaculate and comfortable. I especially liked the 24 hour and 2 hour trip notification that was sent via email. It was reassuring to know they were following up. I highly recommend Corporate Sedan for any transportation needs!
