Family Vacation of History – Philadelphia

Many parents and kids enjoy family vacation trips to different parts of the Country to see and learn about the history of our Country.  Philadelphia, home of the Liberty Bell, is one of the most popular.

If you are going to be traveling to or through Philadelphia on a family vacation this summer you are in for a treat.  Philadelphia is a city teaming with history!  Whether you’re driving or flying in, this is a “must see” attraction.

March through December is the busiest visitors’ season, and the Independence National Park keeps its extended hours during those times.  You can view the Parka t your leisure (all 55 acres) or reserve your spot on a guided tour.

At the Independence National Historical Park where the Liberty Bell is housed, there is so much more to learn and enjoy – your kids will have a blast while enjoying and learning about our Nation’s history.  It is a Park created to preserve the history of our Nation’s birth and it makes real what, in the classroom, is just a “story in the history books” to your children.

Imagine a family vacation where your kids will visit the site of the first meetings of the Continental Congresses, where our founding documents were debated and signed – the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution!

Independence National Historical Park has a Visitors Center, open 8:30am – 6:00pm, which the Parks Department recommends as your first stopping point.  The two main attractions to view

  1. Independence Hall, for which you need tickets and you, can reserve tickets in advance online.
  2. Liberty Bell Center which is free.

The sites are open year round, (though March through December are its busiest times with extended hours), and the Park is in Philadelphia’s Old City.

As an added feature your kids can become junior rangers so be sure to check that out as you look through the “things to do”

Nearby, and within walking distance, you can enjoy art galleries, museums and other nearby historical attractions.  Here is just a small list of the many options.  More is available on the Park website:

African American Museum

Betsy Ross House

Carpenters’ Hall

Burial Ground of Ben Franklin

National Constitution Center

National Museum of American Jewish History

Polish American Cultural Center

Powel House

United States Mint

History comes alive on your family vacation to the Liberty Bell.  Pre-planning will ensure you have a fun and care-free trip, filled with memories.
