Rodin Museum: Philadelphia’s “Paris on the Parkway”

In November 1929, Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway opened its doors to Rodin Museum – a beautiful gift of Parisian culture presented by Philadelphia native philanthropist Jules E. Mastbaum, nestled between The Free Library of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Museum of Art‘s main building. Amidst the Beaux-Arts architecture and formal French garden rests the sculpture of world renowned French sculptor Auguste Rodin.

While many of Rodin’s works were widely criticized during his lifetime, and his realism clashed with the predominant figure sculpture tradition of his era, today he is considered the father of modern sculpture and many of his works are among the most celebrated and recognizable pieces of art throughout the world.

Rodin Museum – Philadelphia

With more than 140 bronzes, marbles, and plasters representing every phase of his career, Rodin Museum presents one of the world’s most distinguished collections of works by Auguste Rodin; the largest Rodin collection outside of Paris.

Among his works on display:

  • Eternal Springtime
  • Copy of “The Kiss”
  • Crying Woman
  • Fording the Stream
  • The Minotaur
  • Madame Vicuña
  • Kneeling Fauness
  • Torso of a Man
  • The Sirens
  • Head of Crying Girl
  • Jules Bastien-Lepage
  • Polyphemus
  • Scene from the French Revolution
  • Youth Triumphant

The French Garden

Here amidst one of Philadelphia’s most romantic environments, eight of Rodin’s sculptures are displayed outdoors in a formal garden setting and near the placid reflecting pool…

  • The Thinker
  • The Gates of Hell
  • Adam
  • The Shade
  • The Age of Bronze
  • Eve
  • The Three Shades

Great customer service- tracking my flight, noting it was going to land 40 minutes early…and making the adjustment so someone was there to meet me at the airport early! Also, receiving a confirmation email 24 hours prior was reassuring as well. Thank you!!
